How to Change Your BitLocker PIN

BitLocker drive encryption helps secure data on your Windows device by ensuring that only authorized users with the correct PIN or encryption key can access the files and information stored on the device. This is especially important if the device is lost or stolen, as it protects sensitive data from unauthorized access.
When setting up a new laptop, a default BitLocker PIN will be applied, which is typically set to 123456. For security reasons, this default PIN must be changed immediately.
By default, your laptop will be set with the basic BitLocker code of: 123456 (This needs to be changed as soon as possible.)
How do I change my BitLocker Code?
Open BitLocker Management:
- Click the Start button (Windows icon) on your taskbar, then begin typing BitLocker.
- Select Manage BitLocker from the search results.

Change Your PIN:
- In the BitLocker settings window, click Change PIN.

Enter Your Current and New PIN:
- In the pop-up window, enter your old PIN.
- Then, enter your new PIN and confirm it by entering it again.
- Your new PIN must be between 8 and 20 characters and must include at least one letter and one number. Special characters and uppercase letters are not required.

Finalize the Change:
- Click Change PIN to confirm your new PIN.
- Once completed, click Close to exit the BitLocker settings.
Forgotten PIN?
If the BitLocker PIN is forgotten, contact the IT department for assistance. A recovery key can be issued to allow access to the device and the opportunity to reset the PIN.
